About

    I'm Kai Myers.

K.AI Consulting is Kai Myers, an environmental scientist and software developer in Anchorage, Alaska. He builds field data apps, internal tools, dashboards and data pipelines for Alaska labs, agencies and contractors, and advises teams on AI strategy, adoption and training. His work includes regulatory and lab-data tooling, glacier hydrology models and avalanche forecasting tools.

I started writing software because I had to. My NASA-funded MS at Alaska Pacific University is a glacier mass-balance model, and the original code was in a language I didn't fully understand. I had to learn to read it, then rewrite it from first principles. That turned into the rest of the work: field apps for environmental compliance crews, snow-coring on iOS, a plant log for a remediation contractor, a bid aggregator for Alaska shops.

Before this: environmental consulting at contaminated sites, ski patrol in Utah, and commercial fishing in Bristol Bay. I build for the work that happens where the road ends, because that's where I've spent most of my career.

    What I build

    • Field data collection apps (offline-first, iOS and web)
    • Internal tools and dashboards
    • Data pipelines and aggregation
    • Regulatory and lab-data tooling (EDD review, ADEC checklists)
    • Glacier and snow hydrology modeling
    • Avalanche forecasting tools
    • AI strategy and advising
    • AI training for teams: primers and hands-on workshops
    • AI integration with guardrails
    • Workflow automation for paper forms and spreadsheets

    Credentials

    • MS Environmental Science, Alaska Pacific University
    • BA, Environmental Science concentration, Quest University Canada
    • Qualified Environmental Professional, as defined by Alaska DEC
    • Presenter, AGU 2025
    • Partner: Beaded Cloud. Formal partnership on avalanche forecasting tools.

    How I work with AI

I use AI primarily for software development. Some of what I build uses AI at runtime, some doesn't. When AI isn't in the product (a field PWA, an iPhone app, a glacier model), all the iteration happens during the build, and what gets shipped is traditional, deterministic software. When AI is in the product (a regulation simplifier, a forecast summarizer), it's because that's the right tool for the job. Even then, it's not free-form. I use skills.md files, system prompts, and reference documents as guardrails, so the AI only does the specific job it was given with the source material it's been told to use.

    My Journey

    2023-Present

    MS Environmental Science

Alaska Pacific University. Thesis: Modeling the Hydrology of Dixon Glacier using PyGEM and DETIM. Project funded by NASA Alaska Space Grant, USGS EDMAP Grant Program, and National Institutes for Water Resources. Thesis defense expected December 2026.

    Environmental Scientist
    2023-2024

    Environmental Scientist

RESCON Alaska. Performed remedial investigations for remote contaminated sites, integrated modern tools into company workflows, and operated heavy equipment in the field.

    Environmental Technician
    2022

    Environmental Technician

Washington State Dept of Agriculture. Measured flow and collected surface water samples, developed rating curves, and reported data to EPA systems.

    Professional Ski Patrol
    2019-2021

    Professional Ski Patrol

Solitude Mountain Resort. Mitigated avalanche hazard using explosives and ski cutting, provided medical care, rescue, and extraction to injured guests, and served as patrol union organizer.

    Bristol Bay Deckhand
    2018-2019

    Bristol Bay Deckhand

Commercial fishing vessel. Set nets and maintained hydraulics, pumps, and motors during multi-week expeditions at sea.

    Bachelor of Arts and Sciences

    Working together

AI should save you time and help you do better work. The judgment stays with you.

I'll tell you plainly what AI can and can't do, and I won't push tools you don't need. The goal is the smallest set of changes that have the biggest impact on the work in front of you.
